HSP Retreat: Dissolving Abuse | Susan’s Story

How Breathwork Uncovered an In-Utero Trauma

Sometimes a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) repeatedly finds themselves trapped in toxic dynamics despite their intelligence and competence. This was the exact dilemma that vexed Susan (a pseudonym), a bright, capable 30-something professional who arrived at an intensive HSP Retreat, desperate to break a painful, recurring cycle of relationship abuse that began as a teenager. For many highly sensitive souls, deep-seated emotional pain and trauma can manifest as self-defeating patterns that logical analysis simply cannot explain.

To find answers, Susan had to bypass her analytical mind entirely and step into the unconscious world of somatic Breathwork. She intended to look for the root of her relationship abuse pattern. However, her spirit was preparing to take her back even further—to a silent, in-utero perception of being unwanted that had quietly dictated her self-worth since before she was even born.

What You Will Discover in This 3-Part Story

  • The Reality of In-Utero Memory: How it is possible to recall specific prenatal and conception memories during a somatic breathwork session.
  • Rapid Somatic Processing: How breathwork bypasses conscious defenses and allows an HSP to unlock, process, and heal ancient wounds without feeling emotionally overwhelmed.
  • The Science of Prenatal Transmission: How groundbreaking discoveries in epigenetics, microchimerism (cells in one person that originate from another individual), and molecular biology prove that mothers and fetuses share a profound biological and cellular dialogue.

The Mystery: Why Did Susan Keep Returning for More Abuse?

By all objective measures, Susan should have been thriving. She was smart, pretty, kind, and exceptionally competent at her work. Yet, behind the polished exterior of her professional success, she was caught in a dangerous, baffling cycle of domestic and emotional abuse. She knew the relationship was toxic. In fact, she had recently vowed with absolute certainty that she would never return to her abusive ex-boyfriend.

But just two weeks after making that firm declaration, she found herself back in his presence. The gravity of that decision became terrifyingly clear while she was driving down the interstate. Her ex-boyfriend sat in the passenger seat as they traveled to a concert in another city. Out of nowhere, his rage flared into a violent frenzy—a terrifying display of anger that Susan had unfortunately witnessed way too many times before. He began yelling at her at the top of his lungs, hitting her directly in the face, and violently grabbing her cell phone away from her.

Knowing her life was in imminent danger, Susan’s mind raced as she struggled to decide the fastest, safest way to escape. Making a split-second decision, she steered the car off the interstate and onto a city street. She slammed on the brakes, stopping the vehicle dead in the middle of the road. Stepping completely out of the car, she began yelling frantically for help.

A passing motorist saw the emergency and immediately called the police, who arrived quickly on the scene to take a report. Fortunately, the responding officer was compassionate, took Susan seriously, and documented the violence. Shaken but safe, Susan drove off alone, leaving her abusive ex-boyfriend stranded by the side of the road.

Susan was bruised physically and deeply traumatized once again. But as the adrenaline faded, a haunting question began to consume her: Why had she returned to a man who consistently abused and endangered her? She was an intelligent, rational woman, yet she could not figure out the underlying psychological force driving her behavior. This baffling mystery became Susan’s core focus when she entered our HSP Breathwork Retreat.

The Paradox: An Abuse-Free Childhood with a Hidden Wound

Susan’s lifelong pattern of dating abusive men remained a profound mystery because she actually enjoyed a happy, abuse-free childhood. She shared a closely bonded relationship with her mom and a satisfying relationship with her dad. There had been no abuse while growing up, and her parents were never abusive to each other. Yet, ever since her teen years, she had experienced repeated abuse from men.

To break this loop, Susan sought answers during our retreat’s prayer-guided Breathwork session. We opened the session with a prayer for the Holy Spirit to fall fresh upon us, to heal us, and to protect us from all outside influences. Only the love, wisdom, and power of Jesus were allowed in the room. I informed the group that while deep emotions could flood them, they would remain in a safe, supported state similar to twilight anesthesia so they would not feel overwhelmed.

The Somatic Cinema: Susan Unlocks the Conception Memory

“It was like watching a movie,” Susan shared during our debriefing session after the breathwork.

“The setting was around the time of my conception. My mother had recently discovered that she was pregnant with me. My mom and dad already had five children, and they were financially stressed. My mom was distraught with the thought of having another child. She did not want to be pregnant, but she would not even think of terminating the pregnancy. She would do the responsible thing, keep this baby, and do her best to care for her sixth child.”

Susan went on to say: “I have no idea if this information is real or not. I’ve never had a thought even close to this. I’ve always known my mother loved me. We’ve been close all my life. I am going to ask my mom about it. I know she will be honest with me.”

Because the retreat lasted all weekend, I encouraged Susan to call her mom that Saturday night so I would have plenty of time to support her if the conversation triggered intense emotional reactions. Susan agreed.

During the phone call, Susan told her mom the whole story of what happened in the breathwork session. Her mother confirmed Susan’s intuition completely, saying, “I did not want to be pregnant, but I did what I had to do. We figured out a way to make it work.”

Having uncovered this early trauma of feeling unwanted, Susan spent Sunday directing her attention to healing that foundational core wound. This vital somatic shift was the beginning of changing her entire life pattern of low self-esteem and subsequent abuse.

PART II: THE CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE & THE SCIENCE

The Science of Early Childhood and Prenatal Imprints

Our early childhood experiences shape the entire trajectory of our lives. What many people do not realize is that this psychological shaping begins long before our first childhood memory—it stretches back into the womb, where in-utero events leave a permanent footprint on our nervous system.

If a fetus is not wanted, the developing child directly experiences and absorbs the intense stress, emotions, and thoughts of the mother. Unless an individual is born at an exceptionally high level of spiritual evolution, the foundational experience of being unwanted results in deep, unconscious low self-esteem. This lack of self-worth later displays itself in adulthood through a variety of self-defeating behaviors, with a high tolerance for abusive relationships being one of the most prominent.

As Dr. Bessel van der Kolk demonstrated in The Body Keeps the Score, the physical body retains the memory of trauma long after the conscious mind has forgotten it.

I once witnessed this while facilitating another woman’s healing. During a private breathwork session, she suddenly exclaimed, “It feels like someone just punched me! It seems like I am in my mother’s womb.”

After the session, the client remarked that she had no idea if the sensation was real, but decided to ask her mother about it. A week later, she phoned me with her mother’s stunned response: “I never told you this, but when I was pregnant with you, your father got really angry at me and hit me in the stomach. It wasn’t the first time.”

Unlocking that somatic memory allowed my client to finally understand her generational pattern of being attracted to abusive men.

Beyond Words: Benita’s Personal Clinical and Spiritual Opinion

Our cells and our spirit remember what our minds forget. Through the lens of a Spiritual Counselor, I look at somatic breathwork as a form of sacred time-travel. It allows us to access deeply buried knowledge of our earliest life and the lived experiences of our family members, uncovering profound, visceral information that our analytical prefrontal cortex simply cannot reach.

It is my clinical and spiritual opinion that a mother and her fetus communicate telepathically, operating far beyond human reason and spoken words. Even though the fetal brain is not yet fully developed, the baby’s spirit and the mother’s spirit speak directly to one another.

Simultaneously, their molecules speak to each other through the shared biochemistry of raw emotion. An unborn child can sense the thoughts and feelings of those around them, heavily influenced by ancestral genetic memory carried directly in the DNA.

Beyond Words: The Research Validating Cellular Memory

This profound intersection of clinical and spiritual insight is fully supported by several distinct scientific fields, bridging mainstream biology, prenatal psychology, and energetic science.

  • The Biochemistry of Emotion:In her groundbreaking book Molecules of Emotion, neuroscientist Dr. Candace Pert explicitly states that neuropeptides and their receptors are the biochemical correlates of emotion. Every emotional state triggers a distinct physical cascade of peptides that physically bind to cells throughout the body, altering its literal chemistry. Her research proves that a mother’s raw emotions physically flood the placenta, triggering receptors that shape the baby’s developing nervous system and embed feelings into cellular tissue before birth.
  • The Message of Blessings:Arthur Burk’s extensive research in “Ministering to Babies in the Womb” reports that when people pray blessings over unborn children, those children exhibit far greater long-term health as adults. This serves as a beautiful real-world example of how information recorded in a fetus’s body-mind-spirit is remembered and retained at a cellular level.
  • Prenatal Awareness: Thomas Verny’s pioneering work in prenatal psychology demonstrates that a fetus is an aware, sensing being capable of perceiving a mother’s unspoken thoughts. An unborn child deeply internalizes the mother’s underlying emotional climate, interpreting visceral stress or rejection as a direct threat to its own safety.
  • Morphic Fields: Rupert Sheldrake’s concept of morphic resonance suggests that mothers and children remain connected through non-local energetic fields operating beyond spoken language. This telepathic field explains why a mother and her child can instantly mirror one another’s psychological states and traumas, functioning as an interconnected, spiritual ecosystem.
  • Placental Signaling: Curt A. Sandman and Elyssia Poggi Davis, along with their team at the University of California, Irvine, proved that a fetus constantly receives chemical signals through the placenta regarding the mother’s exact mental state. The developing physiology of the child actively adapts and shapes itself to the psychological and emotional environment provided by the mother.
  • Generational Trauma & Microchimerism: Rachel Yehuda and pioneers in Behavioral Epigenetics proved that trauma is passed down across generations through chemical tags on the DNA molecule without altering the genetic code itself. Furthermore, feto-maternal microchimerism studies reveal that a fetus trades living cells with the mother across the placenta—cells that can migrate and live in the mother’s brain and heart for decades. A fetus can even retain physical cells passed down from its maternal grandmother, proving we carry tangible pieces of our ancestors’ history in our physical bodies.

PART III: YOUR INVITATION TO HEAL

Reclaiming the Divine Blueprint

Restoring peace at an HSP Retreat.

Our “model of self” forms in the womb and during early childhood, quietly dictating our adult decisions. If your developing subconscious mind absorbs a perception of being unwanted or unloved, you may find yourself magnetically drawn to toxic relationships that mirror that perceived worthlessness. A high tolerance for emotional or physical abuse is one of the most devastating consequences of this hidden somatic programming.

Transforming such deep-seated trauma requires an immersive retreat environment, ongoing expert guidance, and rock-solid boundaries. I know this path intimately because I traveled it during my own healing journey. You can read my full story in my memoir, The Gifted Highly Sensitive Introvert: Wisdom for Emotional Healing and Expressing Your Radiant Authentic Self.

When an HSP finally uncovers the hidden somatic codes driving their adult choices, the destructive pattern completely loses its power. This breakthrough opens the sacred door to genuine self-worth, safe relationships, and lasting peace.

A Message to HSP Men

Highly sensitive men are equally vulnerable to these silent, in-utero imprints. In a world that demands men suppress their sensitivity, absorbing a prenatal climate of rejection often manifests as chronic self-doubt, compulsive people-pleasing, or enduring emotional abuse in silence.
