HSP Retreat: Transcending Anxiety | Helen’s Story
How Highly Sensitive Overachievers
Heal Burnout and Trauma
For many highly sensitive (HSP) women, the heavy burden of anxiety, over-commitment, and chronic exhaustion is hidden behind a flawless mask of success. When perfectionism, parental demands, or the lingering trauma of toxic relationships dictate your daily calendar, your nervous system remains trapped in a state of survival. While traditional talk therapies and Internal Family Systems (IFS) establish an incredible cognitive baseline, deeper somatic processing is required to step past the analytical mind. True healing requires a specialized environment like an HSP Retreat to safely release old survival patterns and restore a sustainable sense of inner peace. This is the real-life journey of Helen (a pseudonym), a successful marketing executive, who combined spiritual counseling and breathwork to step onto a beautiful path of personal and spiritual growth.
What You Will Discover in This Post
- Eliminate Unconscious Coping Patterns: Learn how somatic breathwork rewires deeply ingrained emotional patterns faster than cognitive talk therapy alone.
- Heal the Root of Burnout: Discover how to identify and heal the ancestral and childhood “high-performance” conditioning that forces you to overwork.
- Cultivate Authentic Intimacy: Understand how mending your inner family naturally improves your marriage and family dynamics.
Like many HSPs, Helen loves digging deep to experience higher degrees of mastery. Over a few years, she attended six Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) Breathwork Retreats, participated in HSP Groups, and engaged in individual counseling. Every time she attended a retreat, she experienced amazing breakthroughs. She constantly yearns for personal and spiritual growth—to fully be the woman God created her to be.
How High-Achieving HSPs Mask Deep Trauma
On the outside, Helen looked like an incredibly successful, upwardly mobile woman grossing $200,000 a year in her marketing career. On the inside, she was drowning in anxiety and the physical toll of severe burnout.
She defined herself as “the responsible one.” She was constantly juggling spinning plates: managing her corporate career, raising her boys, nurturing her marriage, caring for her ailing father, and trying to maintain a social life. Even though she was remarried to a loving man, she still carried most of the physical and emotional weight of the household. Her energy was chronically drained by over-giving to her sons to shield them from the pains of her own past.
Her nervous system finally hit a breaking point. In the beginning, she was getting only six hours of fragmented sleep a night, and her short-term memory was failing. Her body was screaming for help through:
- High blood pressure
- Stress-induced hives
- Sudden hair loss
- Severe sugar cravings to self-soothe
The root cause of Helen’s physical and emotional suffering was twofold.
1. The Burden of Perfectionism
Helen was driven by a subconscious childhood program installed by her father, who prioritized high performance over emotional connection. His voice lived inside her head. Her inner critic cracked the whip incessantly, badgering her with the belief that she was “never good enough.” Additionally, Helen knew she needed to address the grief stemming from a lack of secure attachment to her mother, but she had only dipped her toe into that pond.
2. Residual Trauma from a Toxic Marriage
Helen was still reeling from the residual trauma of a previous 18-year marriage. Her ex-husband was narcissistic, as well as physically and financially abusive.
Preparing the Foundation for Healing
True somatic transformation cannot be rushed; it requires a baseline of safety and stability.
Psychotherapist Benita Esposito helped Helen establish a sustainable daily routine of self-care. Helen began prioritizing physical and mental rest alongside proper exercise and nutrition. She unplugged from electronics early, replacing stressful true-crime stories with calming hot baths. She practiced gratitude journaling and used daily relaxation to guide her nervous system back into her “zone of resilience.”
Benita also coached her to step out of the trap of over-responsibility. Helen restructured the way she managed her household. By using electronic chore checklists and apps, she taught her teenage sons to develop essential life skills instead of doing everything for them. This intentional self-nurturance freed up the energy she needed to turn her attention toward healing her deep, unconscious wounds.
The Somatic Processing: What Happened in Breathwork
Unlike secular breathwork models that leave participants navigating an empty void, Benita’s approach is anchored firmly in a grace-filled, Christian perspective. Benita Esposito facilitates a safe container, inviting the Holy Trinity to heal and protect participants.
In the safety of the HSP Breathwork Retreats, Helen used deep somatic breathwork to transcend her highly analytical mind and enter into a direct spiritual connection. She finally surrendered her protective armor. By allowing her breath to move her past cognitive defenses, she safely processed her childhood abandonment wounds and past relationship traumas.
Wrapped in unconditional spiritual love, her brain and body rewired. This broke the emotional freezing patterns that had kept her stuck for decades.

The Results: Life After the Retreat
The shifts Helen experienced were immediate, real, and undeniable. She returned home from the retreats with transformative changes manifesting across every single area of her life:
- Physical Renewal: The breathwork and Benita’s coaching helped Helen lose 70 pounds.
- True Marital Intimacy: She received profound spiritual clarity regarding how her emotional blocks hindered intimacy. She returned home communicating from an authentic, vulnerable level, completely reigniting her marriage.
- Healthy Family Boundaries: Helen stepped out of unhealthy enmeshment with her children. She now helps them navigate teenage struggles from a place of grounded, quiet inner peace without empathically absorbing their stress. She maintains firm co-parenting boundaries with her ex-husband.
- Quieting the Inner Critic: Resting deeply in the knowledge of God’s unconditional love, her inner critic softened. She stopped judging herself by how others perceived her, firmly anchoring her self-worth inside her own spiritual heart.
- Work Boundaries: Helen advocated for herself by decreasing work hours. She also shifted territories so she doesn’t have to travel into dangerous areas of town. She finally enjoys a healthier work-life balance.
As Helen beautifully summarized her experiences:
“Traditional therapy kept my healing in two dimensions. The breathwork sessions with Benita brought it into 3D. It is real, rich, compassionate, and deeply connected to the Holy Trinity.”
