HSP Breathwork Retreat: Healing Self-Loathing & Birth Trauma (John’s Story)

How Breathwork Healed My Deepest Shame

When deep-seated shame and perfectionism hide beneath the surface, intellectual logic is rarely enough to heal them. In this raw and deeply inspiring personal story, John (a pseudonym) shares his journey of attending an HSP Breathwork Retreat—moving from a valley of paralyzing self-loathing to a mountain peak of profound spiritual rebirth.

What You Will Discover in This Story:

  • The Fear of Letting Go: Moving past the anxious need to control the healing process.
  • Healing Pre-Verbal Trauma: How breathwork uncovered and resolved hidden birth trauma.
  • A Bright New Horizon: Exchanging self-judgment for the unconditional love of God.

I have been working with Benita for roughly nine months. She has helped me understand myself better, given me the tools to cope with life, and shown me how to truly thrive. Attending the HSP Breathwork Retreat turned out to be a landmark weekend on the mountain range of my life.

Entering the Dark Valley: The Fear of Letting Go

Prior to the HSP Breathwork Retreat, I found myself in a deep, dark valley—a place I had never experienced before. God was about to lead the blind and broken version of me out of that darkness, and breathwork was His chosen tool.

At first, I was skeptical about the whole experience. However, my wife had tried breathwork before with amazing results, so I figured it couldn’t be that bad. Yet, no matter how much I tried to convince myself, I couldn’t silence my fear of the unknown.

What was I going to experience? Would I lose control over my body? Would my heart stop beating? Would I forget to breathe and simply drift away while no one noticed I was dying? Was I even willing to take that chance?

Well, if you are as desperate for change as I was, the answer is unequivocally, “Yes.”

The greatest transformations occur on the other side of the fear that keeps us from living out our deepest desires. I yearned to fulfill the design God had created for me. I wanted a life that was not just free of pain and strife, but one filled with meaning and worth. Knowing the promised results of breathwork could be a key factor in achieving this, I chose to take the leap.

In an attempt to manufacture a sense of control, I researched extensively beyond the informational materials Benita sent. The physical mechanics of breathwork looked so strenuous that I convinced myself that more knowledge would allow me to master the process and maximize the rewards.

Only after the breathwork session did I realize my research was completely useless.

Letting go and submitting to the process is such an integral part of breathwork that whatever intellectual knowledge you hold beforehand simply ceases to exist during the experience. All you have to do is focus on the breath. After a while, as strange as it sounds, your body takes over. It doesn’t create a fear of death or injury; instead, it allows your mind and spirit to open up to what Christ has prepared for you in that moment of surrender.

I had vastly underestimated the potential of this vessel God gave me. I once believed my body was too tainted by past wrongs to ever be used as an instrument for healing.

Unmasking the Roots of Perfectionism and Self-Loathing

At this retreat, I specifically targeted my self-loathing. My default thought patterns dictated that if I didn’t get something right the first time, I was a failure and a bad person. I believed I had to be perfect, which created a deep sense of shame that warped my identity.

Breathwork gently bypassed the defensive walls of my analytical mind, bringing to the surface the wounded parts of myself that I didn’t even know I was protecting.

The direct experience of breathwork—as opposed to merely talking about my problems—was profoundly transformational. It allowed me to fully face the pain, grief, sorrow, and loss, so I could finally rest in love, comfort, joy, and peace. This direct somatic experience is exactly what mended the broken pieces of my life.

Although everyone’s journey is different, no one walks away unchanged!

Healing My Birth Trauma

During the retreat, I experienced an unexpected journey. I witnessed my own birth, which had been highly stressful. I could feel my unborn self, questioning whether I was truly wanted. I kept hearing a lingering thought: “Do they even want me?”

Then, I saw myself as a newborn, isolated in a hospital bassinet, feeling entirely alone because I had been separated from my mother for the first 24 hours of my life.

I cried out to God, asking how He could leave a small, innocent baby so utterly alone. What He showed and told me next moved me beyond words.

I saw myself cradled in the arms of God as He gently rocked me back and forth. He told me He had stationed angels on a constant rotation to watch over me, and that He had never left my side. Then, He scooped me up and placed me skin-to-skin against His chest, holding me safe and cherished. I have never felt such complete security and unconditional love as I did in the arms of my Heavenly Father.

I was wanted. I was protected. Above all, I was deeply loved.

As we integrated the session, each group member drew a picture of their experience. We then shared, receiving supportive feedback and coaching from Benita.

Some individuals experienced mountains moving with colossal might. For others, thunderstorms crashed down, washing away defensive layers to heal their pain in a flood of love.

Admittedly, I had expected God to descend in a rain of fire on a neon-lit chariot, with the heavens roaring over my victory. I quickly learned that God does not always share my personal flair for drama.

Instead, God met me in a gentle breeze of pure, fresh air that made me want to breathe it in deeply. When I opened my eyes, He had placed me atop a mountain peak, washing away the filth of the valley that I thought had swallowed me whole. I rested in the sacred silence He provided, experiencing the deepest connection to Christ I have ever felt in my life.

Standing on the Mountain Peak: Reborn in a Gentle Breeze

Before this retreat, I was completely unaware of this birth trauma. Now, I feel whole on a fundamental level. Deep internal shifts have left me feeling lighter, filled with authentic self-love, and grounded in my Creator’s affection. This level of healing cannot be intellectualized; it can only happen through direct experience.

Without Benita’s guidance—and the Holy Spirit working through her—I would not be standing on this mountain top today, watching the sun rise over the beautiful mountain range of my life.
