HSP Retreat: Beyond Perfectionism | Krista’s Story
Overcoming Chronic Exhaustion and People-pleasing
For many highly sensitive (HSP) women, perfectionism and people-pleasing are common, everyday challenges. While these survival strategies might build a highly successful public persona, they hide deep emotional wounds, trap the nervous system in chronic exhaustion, and prevent true relational closeness. This real-life journey follows a high-achieving woman who chose to remove her polished public mask during an HSP Retreat. By letting her old coping strategies fall away, she was able to dissolve her people-pleasing habits and reclaim her authentic self.
What You Will Discover in This Post

The Wounded State: Life Before the Retreat

Creative masks: exploring our people-pleasing coping strategies.
Krista (a pseudonym) was a highly sensitive woman who felt driven to overwork, a coping pattern common to many highly sensitive people (HSP). On the outside, she wore a mask that made her life looked polished. No one would have ever guessed that on the inside she felt “not good enough.” An abusive inner critic constantly scolded her, “You are not getting enough done.”
Driven by this underlying anxiety that she hid well, Krista focused 99% of her energy outside of herself. She was trapped in an exhausting cycle of trying to please people, desperately needing their validation because she didn’t know how to affirm her own worth. In her family relationships, she felt a frantic need to control outcomes. She regularly managed conversations by fixing problems and advice-giving, mistakenly believing that enmeshment equaled true devotion.
Krista’s physical body endured the brunt of this unmanaged survival mode. She carried chronic tension locked deep inside her muscles. Her neck was physically stuck at a 45-degree angle, causing her constant pain for years.
The Transformation Framework
Benita Esposito, the retreat leader, explained that true transformation requires healing the wounds of the inner child before anxiety and survival masks can finally fall away. Many of these emotional wounds are buried in the unconscious mind. The retreat’s core agenda was clear: locate the hidden wounds, engage a powerful spiritual connection, and mend the nervous system at the unconscious level.
The Somatic Processing:
What Happened in Breathwork
Everything changed during Krista’s second HSP Breathwork Retreat. Safely anchored by many prior private sessions, she lay on the floor and made a quiet commitment to her Authentic Self: she would stop running away from uncomfortable sensations and emotions. She would just feel them without judging them.
As evocative music filled the room, her analytical mind tried to intervene with panicky thoughts like, “I can’t do this, nothing is happening, just fake it.”
Instead of giving up or distracting herself, she simply kept on breathing. She chose to endure the intense tightness in her face, hands, and belly. When she felt like floating away into detachment, Benita placed a heavy rock on her abdomen to keep her physically grounded in her body.
By allowing her body to shake, sob, and sigh, Krista unlocked the vault holding her childhood wounds. As she persevered through the heavy grief, a doorway spontaneously opened in her mind. She stepped past her protective masks and found herself in a spiritual realm. Resting in the warm, loving arms of Jesus, she received an unforgettable message of unconditional validation: “Remember this.” Her inner family finally felt safe, allowing her overworking inner critic to relax and step down.

The Lasting Transformation: Life After the Retreat
Three weeks after the retreat, Krista emerged with undeniable transformations across every area of her life:
Miraculous Physical Relief: Her chiropractor was completely astonished. After years of being frozen at a 45-degree angle, her neck instantly unlocked to a full, pain-free 90-degree rotation.
The End of Perfectionism: The incessant scolding of her inner critic vanished. Now, she leaves tasks unfinished on her to-do list, finishing her day feeling calm, satisfied, and grounded in self-care.
Relationship Closeness: When her adult daughter shared a problem, Krista stopped trying to fix it. Instead, she listened from her heart without judgment. Her daughter surprised her with a warm hug and exclaimed, “I just love ya.”
Healthy Marriage Boundaries: By letting go of her people-pleasing strategy, Krista allowed her marriage to evolve beyond enmeshment. When her husband invited her on an overseas pilgrimage, she shared that she wanted to stay home. In the past, she would have silenced her own voice and simply gone along with his plans.
Internal Anchoring: Krista no longer views prioritizing her mental health as selfish. Instead, she honors her God-given need for restorative sleep and rest. Her smiles are genuine now, replacing the forced, people-pleasing mask of the past. Even with challenging life situations, she navigates from a peaceful, quiet center.
Gratitude for My New Life
Krista would like to share this closing comment: “Working with Benita Esposito weekly and in these HSP Breathwork Retreats has changed my life immeasurably. I appreciate her extensive knowledge and skill, coupled with her relentless faith and patience. She has breathed new life into me. I am forever grateful. I highly recommend Benita as a spiritual guide on the HSP journey to wholeness.”
